How it works

How debossing and embossing work

Debossing and embossing create your logo with pressure rather than ink. For debossing, a custom metal die, usually brass or magnesium, is made from your logo, heated and pressed into the material, leaving a recessed impression. Embossing does the opposite: a matched pair of dies pushes the material up from behind so the logo stands raised. A blind deboss has no colour and relies on the shadow of the impression, while hot foil stamping adds a metallic or coloured foil, such as gold or silver, in the same pressing step.

Materials and products that suit it

Debossing is the classic finish for genuine and PU leather, so it is widely used on leather notebooks and organisers, wallets and card holders, passport holders and portfolios. Embossing is mostly used on paper and board, such as rigid custom gift boxes, sleeves and greeting cards. The understated look suits executive gifting and long service and retirement gifts for senior staff in Riyadh, Jeddah, Abu Dhabi and Muscat.

Artwork, durability and choosing a method

  • Artwork: a vector file with clean, solid shapes. Fine lines, small text and tight gaps can close up, so bold logos work best.
  • Colour: blind debossing has no colour; foil is chosen from available foil shades rather than mixed Pantone inks.
  • Durability: the impression is permanent and does not rub off, though foil can soften with very heavy handling over time.

For crisp fine detail or individual names on leather, laser engraving is a good alternative, and for colourful logos on packaging, consider full-colour digital print. A free digital mock-up is shared before the die is made, and MOQ and lead time are shown on each product and confirmed in your quote. Get a quote for debossed leather gifts today.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between debossing and embossing?

Debossing presses the logo into the surface so it sits below the material, which is the usual choice for leather notebooks, wallets and portfolios. Embossing raises the logo above the surface and is used mainly on paper and card packaging such as gift boxes. Both use a custom die and no ink, unless foil is added for colour.

Can you add gold or silver colour to a debossed logo?

Yes. Hot foil stamping combines the deboss with a metallic or coloured foil, and gold and silver are popular choices for executive gifts in the Gulf. Foil comes in a set range of shades, so it will not be an exact Pantone match. Your mock-up shows the foil colour against the leather or box colour you have chosen.

Can each notebook be debossed with a different name?

Debossing needs a die for every design, so individual names are usually not practical with this method. A common approach is to deboss the company logo on every notebook and then laser engrave each name separately on the cover or a metal plate. Tell us how many names you need and we will suggest the cleanest combination.

Is debossing suitable for Arabic calligraphy logos?

It can be, as long as the strokes are not too thin and the gaps between letters are wide enough for the die to press cleanly. Detailed calligraphy with hairline strokes may lose definition, especially on grained leather. We check your file and may suggest a slightly larger size before showing it in the free digital mock-up.
